Life Legacy

John F. Tierney, age 69, of Milton, DE, formerly of Glassboro, NJ, passed away on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, DE. He was born on September 14, 1943, son of the late John Paul and Margaret (Leonard) Tierney.

Mr. Tierney honorably served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Following his service, Mr. Tierney spent a lifelong career working for Public Service Electric & Gas in New Jersey, spending most of his years at the Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Salem, NJ. Following retirement in 1997, he moved to Milton, where he worked until 2010 as a delivery driver for CHEER. Mr. Tierney enjoyed many years of Coaching Little League in Glassboro, especially when his sons were on the team. He loved slipping out to the golf course when he could, but most of all he loved spending time with his family; his grandchildren were the apples of his eye. Mr. Tierney will be remembered for his dependability, genuine personality, and pure ability to make you laugh. His last memory and a true testament to his character, was his choice to be an organ donor, and on October 7th he was able to give the “Gift of Life”.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Tierney was preceded in death by his two sisters, Margaret Blankenship and Mary Ann Tierney. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Dolores “Dee” (Tallia) Tierney; his two sons: Sean Tierney and his wife Christina of Chelsea, AL and Timothy B. Tierney and his wife Elizabeth of Pitman, NJ; four grandchildren: Daniel, Brian, Jacob and Katelyn Tierney; two sisters: Rita Santo of Wayne, NJ and Joan Bannworth of Monroe, NJ; sister in law, Patricia Cropanese and her husband Joseph of Pompton Plains, NJ; numerous nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

Memorial Services with Military Honors will be held on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at 11:00 AM, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, DE. Friends may visit at the funeral home beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, 200 Continental Drive, Suite 101, Newark, DE 19713.
